Minnesota Law Schools

The law schools sometimes sponsor legal clinics to help individuals and businesses meet their legal needs without hiring an attorney.  They also have law libraries you may be able to use.

U of MN - Wm Mitchell - Hamline - St. Thomas

County Law Libraries [▲top]

The county libraries contain the source materials for lawyers.  Mostly these libraries contain legalese, but you may find excellent materials that a non-attorney can follow.

Dakota - Goodhue - Hennepin - Washington

Courts [▲top]

Minnesota Court sites often have forms and information for navigating the court system.  Visit the MN Court System to view a map of the courts by judicial district.  Judicial districts include multiple counties, except in Hennepin County, which is the 4th district, and Ramsey County, which is the 2nd district.

Lawyer Screening & Evaluation [▲top]

Find out whether your attorney is licensed to practice law in Minnesota using the Attorney Registration List.  The list can also help you determine the relative experience of various attorneys you are considering hiring.  Look up the attorney by name, and write down his/her ID number.  Do the same for the other attorneys on your list.  The larger the ID number, the newer and presumably, less-experienced, the attorney.

If you're questioning your attorney's conduct, visit the Lawyer's Board website to review attorney professional conduct regulations.

Lawyers Board of Professional Responsibility

To make sure your attorney has not been recently suspended or disbarred, review this list hosted by the Lawyer's Board:

List of Disbarred and Suspended Attorneys

Similarly, the Client Security Board maintains a list of lawyers who have cheated clients or committed malpractice, when the state paid the bill.  Some of these attorneys have been reinstated and are currently practicing.
